Fairfax's Good Weekend magazine features a profile of Michel Houellebecq that covers much the same ground as all the other slightly puzzled profiles of Michel Houellebecq that have appeared in the past couple of years. I did learn, however, that Houellebecq and his wife once had sex during an interview. And it wasn't a phone interview.

What is he, some kind of sex maniac?

Yeah, pretty much. He's also supposed to be a brilliant writer, although I read his second novel Atomised (in translation, admittedly) and didn't spot any evidence. He's certainly good value in interviews, and says things few, if any, mainstream American/English/Australian authors would get away with.

He isn't bad as far as they go, but yeah, he pretty much overemphasises the intercourse in his books. His little "biography" of Lovecraft is pretty good, though, but you're not missing anything if you've already read Celine.

That was a joke. I think he's a really really really ordinary writer about whom nobody would give a stuff if he didn't write books that have pictures of girls in their knickers on the covers.
